The history of AD LOVE
Last year, we founded AD LOVE with a simple mission--to spread love using tennis as a vehicle. Simply put, it’s been a blast. Over the last 12 months we’ve gotten the chance to hear your stories, meet many of you in-person and connect over a game and a goal that we’re incredibly passionate about.
This year, we’re hoping to do even more. How? We’re sharing the stories of those who have impacted us through our regular AD LOVE Stories blog series and inspiring the AD LOVE movement through the AD LOVE Challenge series--which helps our followers make the world a better place through simple, small, and enjoyable means. We’re thrilled to have begun 2019 with such a positive start and can’t wait to see what’s next.
In addition, the last year has shown us the power of human connection and the tennis community. Knowing that, we want to share a little more of ourselves with all of you. Who we are, what motivates us, why we started AD LOVE.
Who are we?
AD LOVE was founded by us, Scott and Brent Hardy. Brothers and life-long tennis fans. Aside from that, we are fathers, passionate individuals, and lovers of life.
Both of our parents played tennis and got us on the court at a young age. They introduced us to the sport at a pivotal time in the 1970s--during the era of John McEnroe, Chrissy Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Billie Jean King.
Brent, being the youngest, started hitting with me (Scott) at the local courts in Madison, New Jersey while I was playing on the high school team. Brent, being the most naturally gifted athlete of the family, quickly surpassed my tennis skills by the time he was in high school, eventually leading him to play D1 tennis at Providence College.
In the 1980s, we both started attending the U.S. Open as fans (a tradition that has continued each year to this day). Since then, we’ve traveled to Wimbledon in 2009 and The French Open in 2015. Now, only the Australian Open remains and the goal is for 2020!
Both of us have also been active in USTA league play. I’ve made it to sectionals with both men's and mixed doubles teams from Maine. Brent’s days of collecting USTA singles titles may be numbered, but he continues to enjoy competing on a men’s 40+ 4.5/5.0 team.
Throughout our years playing and watching tennis, we have been continuously inspired by the game and the global tennis community. The sport pushes players to be their best-selves, inspiring sportsmanship, kindness, and integrity. The global tennis community is open and welcoming, inspiring inclusivity and a celebration of diversity that’s unlike any other. It’s a game that inspires life-long bonds--through evening matches at town courts, team play, USTA leagues, and appreciation as a fan. Simply put, there is nothing else like it.
It’s that “spirit of the game” that drove us to start AD LOVE and it’s what steers the company to this day. Through our close partnership with National Junior Tennis & Learning chapters, NYJTL and Norwalk Grassroots Tennis AD LOVE gives 10% of all profits (plus $1 from each shirt and hat sale) to provide less-advantaged children with access to after-school educational and tennis programming--spreading a love for the sport to the next generation and helping to improve the lives of thousands of students.
So, what’s next for the Hardy Brothers?
Late in my career in high-tech, I decided that I wanted to change paths and create a new business within the tennis industry I love. The idea for AD LOVE was born in the summer of 2016. I left my job in the software industry at the end of 2017 to focus on AD LOVE full time. Brent joined AD LOVE in early 2018 and we have been partners ever since.
2019 is shaping up to be a very busy year for AD LOVE. Aside from launching the AD LOVE Stories and Spread the Love Challenge series, we are currently planning a series of pop-up stores at tennis clubs across New England.
